5 Steps to keep your Utah Custom Home warm.

In Utah winters are cold but there are 5 steps to keeping you Utah Custom Home warm this winter.

Install a programmable thermostat.   These thermostats keep your house warm when you are home and cooler when you are gone. Properly programmed, the small investment for a programmable thermostat can give you big returns. In fact, www.energystar.gov says that a programmable thermostat can save an average family up to $180 in energy costs per year.

Heating system tune up.   Just like your car, your furnace and heating system need a little maintenance from time to time in order to keep it functioning well. Make sure to get the equipment checked out and tuned up.

Change your air filters.   Most homeowners know that they should change their air filters every three months or so. But, in high use seasons like summer and winter, your air filter may get dirty more quickly. Check your filter every month and if it is dirty, change it. If you have a dirty air filter, your system has to work harder to heat or cool your house which costs you money. Also, if your air filter is dirty, your system ends up getting dirty too which can damage it leading to costly repairs.

Use natural solar power.   During the winter months, open your curtains on your south facing windows during the day. Allow the sun to heat your home for free.

Weatherstrip your doors and windows.   A lot of heat escapes around the doors and windows of your home. Caulk or add weatherstriping around the doors and windows to seal the cracks and keep the heat in.
